Shindig returns this Saturday night (tomorrow) at its new home, World Headquarters. I HATE WHQ, worst nightclub in Newcastle in my opinion. That is because i have always hated the music it plays on a Saturday night, and didnt really like the crowd much. On a ‘normal’ night it costs £8 to get in, and as my friends put it “yeah its expensive to get in but then the drinks are cheap”…But how many drinks do you have while clubbing? Not many, as you have been drinking all night.
Anyway, WHQ is the new home for Shindig since its departure from Digital. Reasons it left were musical differences, Its not the first time Shindig or other events have threatened to leave Newcastle’s biggest nightclub. The biggest problem with a big space is filling it. If you charge lots of money and have two events on a week then you will find (as they have) people are not going to spend their money going to all the events.
Line up
DENNIS FERRER
SCOTT BRADFORD
NEIL BAINBRIDGE
DOWNSTAIRS:
SOLID GROOVE SOCIAL CLUB
PAUL T (BREAD & CIRCUS)
WHQ has a smaller capacity, so will be easier to fill, and therefore create a better atmosphere.
Doors open at 22.30 and the place is open until 04.00 tickets are £10 and more on the door.
Another thing i hate about the place is the location…miles away from anything. If you dont know where it is point your drunk sat-nav to:
World Headquarters Club & Globe City Gallery
Curtis Mayfield House
Carliol Square
East Pilgrim Street
Newcastle upon Tyne
United Kingdom
NE1 6UP
Telephone : 0191 2813445

Well, I think this is possibly a little narrow minded a review. World HQ is more than a club , it represents many years of cultural exchange in the Newcastle area. Its roots in Marlborough Crescent as Club Africa later becoming WHQ have defined it as probably the longest running truly soulful nightclub in town … and I dont just mean soul music .. I mean just quality music , and real values .
Its ok, if you dont like that vibe then you re probably not not going to enjoy it .. WHQ is for real people, independent of race or culture, not top-man punks or H&M rock stars ..
The last time i was in, which was a long time ago, it was rubbish, and that is what i base my review on. There was a PA/MC or something bouncing around behind the DJ like he was on drugs, and the crowd in general seemed that was aswell.
I wish i could write more, but the place is not fresh in my mind anymore as it was then.
