Cooperage
Best Bar in Newcastle is The Cooperage for July 2009
Posted by Michael on August 5, 2009The bar of the month for July has to be the bar which is no more. The Cooperage has closed its doors because of complaints of noise and the council insists it will not open again until the building is soundproofed.
The Cooperage dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest buildings in Newcastle city centre. It is located on Newcastle quayside and was a pub, bar and nightclub opening all day serving food until late where you could party the night away.
Over the years The Cooperage had many nights on, including a Latino night which was very popular aswell as more traditional nightclub style nights.
With prices for entry and drinks reasonable and a good atmosphere The Cooperage will be missed on Newcastle Quayside.
The Cooperage Closes – They Bring the Noise
Posted by Michael on July 22, 2009One bar which Newcastle VIP likes is The Cooperage. It is historic, and is one of the few places in Newcastle which has not followed the trend with the posh bars and has individuality and character. The character has now gone, because The Cooperage is no more.
This is because the council has got noise complaints, and city council planners decided that it must be soundproofed…This is crazy?! Why would it need to be soundproofed? The Cooperage is one of the oldest places in Newcastle, and things were fine before, and now the council have decided that because of some complaints that the place needs to be silenced.
This is no coincidence that there are nearby new-bulid apartment complex’s which are a new addition to the city. If you are living in a city you should expect to have noise, if you are buying a place close to bars or nightclubs then it is to be expected. This kind of move from the council could kill Newcastle’s nightlife. The Bewick House was also forced to stop their music for the very same reason.
It is even more of a shame when you find out that these apartment blocks are not selling well, some sit empty, while others have been repossessed and then sold on for half of their price. They are over-priced tiny flats, and a few years on we have seen some such as “The Bar” complex, one apartment sold in 2006 for £235,995; The exact same apartment sold in 2009 for £117,000.
Maybe the council will see sense, although i doubt it. The Cooperage seems to be gone, and others could follow, lets hope not.
The Cooperage – Empty on a Saturday night
Posted by Michael on June 5, 2009The Cooperage, which is down the quayside in Newcastle is a nightclub with a difference. It is more of an alternative kind of place, with music played such as Salsa and Latino styles. It is good when it is full, its nice to go somewhere different from the majority of clubs which offer the same thing.
The building is one of the oldest in Newcastle, so if you are into that kind of thing you will find that interesting. It can make for an interesting layout, with door frames of different sizes, if you are tall you may have to bend down to go through some places.
The club is split into various different rooms and on different levels, its very easy to get lost in here, not because its that big, but because of the number of rooms on different levels.
They sell a good range of drinks, reasonably priced. The entry fee is around £4.
Unfortunatly when we went only 2 weeks ago the place was dead. There was around 20 people in the whole place, 20 people split into various rooms makes the place look almost not open. This was around midnight and later, which is peak time for a club. I doubt we will be going back anytime soon, its one of those places we go once in a while.
